Every year, millions of Americans over the age of 65 are injured in falls – they are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for that age group. 1 out of 4 older people fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once actually doubles the chances of falling again. The good news is that falls are preventable. Following these simple steps can help prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls: Talk to Your Doctor

Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about falling to help you identify your risk factors. Many conditions increase your risk, including lower body weakness, difficulties with balance, medicine use, vision problems, foot problems, and more. Your doctor can give you exercises and adjust medications, as necessary to reduce your risks. Always ask questions and be honest with your doctor, so you can receive the best care!

How to Prevent Falls: Make Your Home Safer

Accidental falls can also be caused by hazards inside the home, including broken steps, clutter, footwear, and rugs.

  • Clear walkways
  • Get rid of clutter
  • Wear anti-skid footwear
  • Improve lighting
  • Add grab bars by toilets, tubs, and showers
  • Add railings to both sides of stairs
