Thank you for choosing MUSC Health. Our main goal is the safety of our patients, families and care team members. Here are some tips on how to properly put on and take off a face mask.

1. Wash your hands

Wash your hand with soap and water or alcohol based hand gel for at least 20 seconds.

2. Check mask

Only touch the mask by the ties or loops. Check mask for any defects and throw away if you find one. Put the exterior side (usually colored) facing out, away from your face. The stiff, bendable edge goes at the top of your nose.

3. Put mask on

If the mask has loops, put one loop around each ear. If ties, tie each set of ties in a bow behind your head. Use your index finger and thumb to pinch the bendable top edge around the bridge of your nose.

4. Correct fit

Your mask should cover your nose and mouth and the bottom edge must be under your chin. Wash your hands again and do not touch the outside of your mask.

5. Keep mask on

Do not pull the mask down to talk to someone or do things that require touching the mask.

6. Remove mask

Wash your hands before removing your mask. Only touch the ties or loops to remove. Throw mask away in the trash and wash your hands.
